On February 5, students of Klaipėda Lyceum took part for the second time in the regional English-language debate tournament “Speak Up! Gargždai”, which was held at Gargždai Vaivorykštė Gymnasium.
The debate motion, “This House Believes That Smart Schools Are Essential for Future Sustainability,” encouraged students to critically examine the relationship between education, technology, and sustainability.
The strongest teams in the region competed in the tournament, representing Klaipėda Lyceum, Vytautas Didysis Gymnasium, Vydūnas Gymnasium, E. Balsys Arts Gymnasium, and Gargždai Vaivorykštė Gymnasium.
After intense debates, both Klaipėda Lyceum teams advanced to the final.
First place was won by M. Kazlauskas (II MYP C), B. Barkauskaitė (II MYP A), and K. Safronov (II MYP C).
Second place (runner-up) was awarded to the other Klaipėda Lyceum team: M. Rastenis (II MYP A), E. Vekteris (II MYP A), and S. Leščiūtė (II MYP A).
This marks the second debate tournament from which Klaipėda Lyceum students have returned with awards—this time also bringing home the first-place trophy.
Individual achievements were equally impressive. Out of 30 tournament participants, four top speakers were selected from Klaipėda Lyceum: K. Safronov, S. Leščiūtė, M. Rastenis, and E. Vekteris.
The students’ preparation for the debates was coordinated by English teacher L. Šmaižienė.
We would like to thank Business Management teacher S. A. Stewart for the valuable support provided to students in the field of research while preparing for this relevant topic.
