From April 16–20, DP1 students Eleonora Kavoliūnaitė, Vėjūnė Liatukaitė, Nojus Tamošauskas, and Balys Stankevičius, together with teacher Egidijus Sereičikas, participated in the International IB History Conference in Krakow, “Hundred Years After Triumphs of Authoritarianism in Europe”.
During the conference, the students presented a paper: Nojus and Balys discussed the biography of A. Smetona and the political context of the December 17, 1926 coup, highlighting Smetona’s role. Eleonora and Vėjūnė approached the topic from a different perspective, presenting the significance and influence of Sofija Smetonienė in political and social life.
A key part of the conference was a parliamentary simulation aimed at forming a stable Italian government in 1921. It featured intense debates, discussions, and strategic decision-making in order to build a coalition. One of the most memorable moments was an unexpected question that was asked: “Are there fascists here?” — a phrase that remained in the participants’ memory for a long time.
The trip also brought challenges — due to a cancelled flight, plans had to be changed, and the group travelled to Krakow via a longer route through Palanga, Riga, and Helsinki. Nevertheless, good spirits and teamwork accompanied the entire journey.
During the visit, the students explored the Schindler Museum and Auschwitz — an experience that left a strong emotional impact and encouraged deeper historical reflection. They also joined a guided tour of Krakow, visiting Wawel Castle, seeing the legendary dragon, and exploring the Jagiellonian University.
The students are pleased with the experience gained, new knowledge, and the opportunity to represent the school in an international setting.
Sincere thanks to “Open Future International School of Krakow” for the excellent organization and warm welcome!
