An unusual event organized by the Biology Society (“BioSa”) took place at Klaipėda Lyceum

During the event, students from classes II BIO, II MYP A, I BIO, as well as a few students from other gymnasiums, had the opportunity to briefly immerse themselves in the fascinating world of biology.

Students spent the entire afternoon listening to lectures and engaging in practical activities led by medical, biochemistry, and molecular biology students from Lithuania’s top universities – LSMU and VU.

From the very beginning of the event, students tested their knowledge by identifying and diagnosing diseases based on given descriptions and listened to a presentation on the history of medical diagnostics. Later, they explored the world of microbiology more closely, where they were introduced to a student-conducted study on protein production from extracted bacterial genetic material.

After that, students “tried on” the profession of a cardiac surgeon: they examined a pig’s heart, learned to recognize its structural parts, touched its inner chambers and muscular layer. At the same time, they refreshed their existing knowledge about this human organ and learned new facts.

Having carefully analyzed the heart and briefly felt like medical professionals, students once again dived into the microscopic world of cells. In the biochemistry laboratory, they observed onion epithelial cells, yeast budding, and the microscopic structure of saliva through microscopes. They even attempted to spot cardiomyocytes of the heart, but were unable to do so.

This day was especially rich in new experiences and impressions. The professional approach and enthusiasm of the young specialists further inspired students to take an interest in the fields of medicine and biology.
